Gianni Versace was one of the most appreciated Italian designers. He started up his career in the fashion set in his mother's atelier, nowdays seat of Versace's boutique. In 1972 he moved to Milan to work as fashion designer; in 1978 he founded the homonymous label and presented his first woman collection characterized by an eccentric, elaborate and unique style, a perfect fusion between elegant and sporty. In 1982, he won The Golden Eye Award as best designer of FW woman collection 1982/1983. In 1986, the President of the Italian Republic, Francesco Cossiga nominated Versace "Commendatore" of the Italian Republic. After his death in 1997, his family took the reins of the firm.
